WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE. YOU JUST HAD TO BE THERE: 90’s R&B NEW JACK SWING

Back in my school year of 1988/89, It was a time to be alive and you had to be there. It was something electrifying in the air happening in black music. We were coming from the hard electro funk brand of R&b from artist like The Time, Rick James, Zaap,The P-Funk All Stars, Cameo, The Deele, Gap Band, Shalamar and The Whispers to a new sound called New Jack Swing; created by Teddy Riley. New Jack Swing Fused Hip Hop beats with R&B with a swing to it. It was different, a new type of sexy, it was energetic, it was fresh, it was Hip Hop, it was history in the making, it was innovative, it was culture and it was ours. This was a time in my life, I was glued to the radio because what ever came next, it was awesome. There was a variety of great black music being played and R&B radio was on fire! This IS NEW JACK SWING, 90’s R&B…. You’re welcome.

Teddy Riley on left. Teddy created New Jack Swing; He changed the face of radio with his sound. Teddy created hits for everybody from Bobby Brown to Michael Jackson. On the upper right hand corner, on the left is BabyFace and to the right is L.A. Reid. Together they were a power house creating hits for Bobby Brown, After7, Dru Hill, Tevin Campbell, Anita Baker, Gladys Knight and Whitney Houston. More often than not, their productions and songwriting would be on the same albums as Teddy Riley’s, or Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis which made a sick guaranteed R&B smash. LA & Babyface went on to form LaFace Records. Laface Records brought us Usher, Outkast, TLC and Toni Braxton. L.A. Reid is currently the CEO of Epic Records. On the Bottom right is Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis from left to right. They wrote and produced smashes for New Edition, Karyn White , Jonny Gil, Ralph Tresvant, Boyz II Men and Janet Jackson. If you had a major bag from your record company, you could get the R&B superstar package. The R&B Superstar package was Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis with La & Babyface or La Reid & Babyface with Teddy Riley. If you really want to be ambitious and say f”ck it we’re going to Mars, you can take the whole 3 piece combo package and sell 10 million records! This playlist has these amazing producers and songwriters finger prints all over it. What time to be alive, and I was there to witness greatness.
